The introduction of the use of high-strength steel in residential architecture has expanded the range of design possibilities that has at the same time been limited without a proper understanding of its physical properties and its application. JA charts the history of the use of steel in small-scale Japanese houses, starting with Kenji Hirose’s ‘SH-1’ built in 1953 and concluding with the celebrated projects of today.
