This publication aspires to highlight the architectural wealth of buildings in the capital of the modern Greek state. So, the basic criterion that guided our selection is the unique architectural value of the building’s facade, as well as its lingering presence in the city today. The presence of a building in these pages is also linked to secondary criteria. For instance, an effort was made to distribute buildings fairly equally among the studied periods. Also, we strived to represent all important architectural trends and the powerful personalities that marked these two centuries – and had a strong presence in Athens. Other secondary selection criteria were the use of the building (presentation of public buildings, halls, residences, churches, etc.), their location (within the Attica basin, with minimal exceptions) and the historic value of some buildings, which complemented their architectural qualities.
