Description

UnSangDong Architects were the first practice from Korea to feature in the Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Awards in 2007 for their Gallery Yeh project. This piece of urban fabric, a sort of draped building in which the exterior takes of a life of its own. This is uncompromisingly contemporary architecture, pushed to the limits of geometry and structural possibility while avoiding the bland international corporate architecture so evident in Seoul. Colour and light play an important part in this work, whether in completed projects as the Kumho Gallery of Housing Culture, or in conceptual ideas such as their proposals for an Olympic Memorial in Paris. Their designs for the KTNG Culture Complex in Yongsan were inspired by the notion of a ‘floating city freed from the ground’ with layers of different uses intersecting above a ground plane plaza. Other projects include the Museum for NamJune Paik, the Gallery 303, the Design Center in GwangJu, a Plaza of the GwangJu Biennale, an Eco Frame House and the ChiChi Memorial.
