Inspiration and creativity are characteristics of mankind that, despite the difficulties, the awareness of boundaries, the faults, is capable of dreaming, of creating, of inventing. I revere capable, creative people, artists who create work that has the power to move, to challenge and to awaken.
Contemporary art questions what is happening around us, strives to influence or to comment, it is a force that timely deals with the present and tomorrow of our society. Contact with contemporary art stimulates us, both individually and collectively, highlighting the ability of artistic creativity to arouse, to deeply move, to motivate.
I have chosen to dedicate my efforts to art, to support, sustain, and promote contemporary creativity primarily in Greece and internationally. I am committed through our activities to broadening the understanding and appreciation of contemporary art in Greece and the public’s access to it. NEON was created for precisely that purpose, to give the opportunity to as many citizens as possible, to the general public, to come into contact with the ideas and challenges of contemporary art.
In a country whose classical civilisation characterises its past and runs through its present, engagement with contemporary art constitutes to me an important challenge. I believe that, based on our cultural heritage, we can bring out our present strengths, our contemporary creativity, as we invest in culture as a driving force for growth and development.
Maria Loizidou’s installation in an archaeological site of such great importance as Kerameikos is a collaboration of our society’s creative forces. It brings contemporary culture close to contemporary citizens and bridges our relationship with the city, our cultural roots, the present, the past, and the future.
