Lucas Hadjilucas – Koursoumbas (1901-1987) was a pioneer of the new architecture of Cyprus in the 20th century. He was a member of a renowned family of master-builderswho continued the centuries old tradition of the building art, which was transmitted from generation to generation. The young Lucas grew up and was nurtured in this environment as an apprentice to his master-builder relatives….. So, he went on to study Architecture at the Boston Architectural College (BAC) in 1920-26 and then practiced as an architect in various parts of New Jersey in the USA.
He returned to and was-patriated in Cyprus at the end of 1932 and founded a large architectural practice. Hadjilucas’ work is vast and constitutes a creative synthesis of Cypriot building art and tradition, with influences from the architecture of New England, USA and European early Modernism.
