Description
Two distinct yet related themes play out in this issue: “Re-assessing Local Identity” and “Persistent and Evolving Traditions”. In the first, projects such as MVRDV’s Glass Farm, the Sancaklar Mosque by Emre Arolat, Wa Shan Guesthouse by Amateur Architecture Studio and Herzog & de Meuron’s Arena do Morro demonstrate how architecture can express a regionality that does not necessarily entail locality: they are global architectures, in place with a local condition. Yet it is precisely the growth of globalisation in architecture that has many concerned about the persistence of local cultural aspects that could define an identity, which the second theme addresses as counterpoint.
