S AM 06: Balkanology: New Architecture and Urban Phenomena in South Eastern Europe
Extensive informal building activities, in turn a novel form of urbanization, began in the western Balkans after the collapse of the People’s Republic of Yugoslavia and its socialist economy. The resulting architectural and urban structures are characterized by trans-local influences and embraced by large sections of the society. This phenomenon, which provides potential pointers to future forms of urban living in Europe is explored here through image and text.
