Description
In his opening essay, Jaap Dawson calls the modern vernacular an oxymoron. The rules modern architecture follows negate those very rules that lead to vernacular buildings. Furthermore, Maurizio Scarciglia points out the fictional experience created by today’s tourism topologies as being vernacular escapism. The issue goes on to explore the thought behind distinctions such as these through examples and analyses of contemporary buildings with vernacular characteristics. Among the featured projects are Bangkok Tree House, Lanxi Curtilage, Tåkern Visitor Centre, Basiliani Hotel and Fasano Boa Vista Hotel. Also included, an in-depth profile of HyoMan Kim’s practice.
